Our Story

Welcome to Alta Rosa Farm, where the beauty of Vashon Island meets the bounty of regenerative agriculture.

Established in 2015, when we moved 200+ potted fruit trees to our new 10-acre property on the idyllic island of Vashon, the traditional, unceded land of the sx̌ʷəbabs (“Swift Water People”).

In the early 20th century, Vashon was known by the sobriquet of “the fruit basket of Puget Sound”. Alta Rosa is more than just a farm—it's a testament to our deep-rooted commitment to regenerative practices, community engagement and the celebration of local food and biodiversity.

Our Mission

At Alta Rosa Farm, our mission is simple: to nourish our community, cultivate connections, and steward the land with care and respect.

We believe that by embracing regenerative agriculture practices, we can not only produce delicious, nutrient-dense food but also contribute to the health and vitality of our ecosystem.

The soil on Vashon is essentially glacial till, called “Alderwood gravel”. Our property has only a thin layer of topsoil. We have been working since our inception to improve soil carbon and microbiome, with the help of our alpacas and chickens, local biochar and local soil nutrients from a producer on Vashon.

We focus on growing and propagating three types of apples: cider, red-fleshed and russet varieties. We now have over 400 fruit trees: apples, pears, plums, hazelnut and walnut trees; we grow 17 varieties of rhubarb which you can sample at Vashon food vendors.

We provide custom grafting services to provide you with that special tree. We also sell a large selection of dormant apple scionwood so you can graft  your own!
